When installing a new lawn, it’s good to apply a half inch of Grade A compost over your existing soil. Choosing a Fertilizer
All plants need essential nutrients to grow and those that are needed in the greatest amounts are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. The optimal fertilizer contains the right amounts of each of these for your lawn. All fertilizer packages must list three numbers (such as 16-4-8) which represent the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium found in the fertilizer.
Compost
Top dressing with a thin layer of compost ¼ inch thick, once or twice a year while your lawn is still growing, can be very beneficial to the health of your lawn. Compost contains microbes, nutrients, and an abundant supply of organic material. It also aides drought resistance and acts as a natural aerator in compacted and clay soils.
